The American Association for State and Local History will host a webinar on building mutual trust and respect between staff and governing authority leaders.
Date: Thursday, April 3, 2025
Time: 2:00 p.m. CDT
Location: Online
Price: $25 for members/$45 for non-members
From AASLH:
For many history museums and heritage organizations, the focus and effectiveness of the governing authority “makes or breaks” the organization’s functioning and progress towards mission impact, relevance, and sustainability. When a governing authority is working well, in partnership with staff leadership, it enables an organization’s ability to serve its communities, at the same time assuring its own organizational stability and future existence. If it is not working well, it can be an exercise in frustration for individual governing members and staff leaders, because it is difficult to get much of anything done, let alone grow and develop the organization or fulfill the organization’s purpose.
What is the staff leader’s responsibility for educating, supporting, and facilitating the governing authority’s work? We’ll explore four lessons that are key.
What will (and will not) be discussed
Participants will learn about:
- Facilitating a shared understanding of the organization mission and impact with your staff and board
- Building internal clarity around roles, responsibilities, and flow of authority
- Assessing staff leadership/governing authority needs
- Establishing success measures that focus on impact for all aspects of the mission
Because one webinar cannot cover every aspect of a topic, this webinar will not discuss:
- Board/governing authority recruitment
- Creating or disbanding a board
- Legal issues
